The series of works "Irregular Development (Mexico City)" addresses different aspects of the expansion of Mexico City in recent years. Each work was realized in a medium that was best suited to address a specific issue.

This way, through the etching "Corroding Stain" I attempted to establish a parallelism between the polluting nature of the city with that of the etching medium, and its employment of acids, which are harmful for the environment.

Through the rest of the works I tried to connect an architectural drawing style and the commonly employed medium of drawing to the issue of imagining the urban infrastructure. However, my attention was pointed out to the things that architects have often missed out when planning the city. This way, I’ve realized four different studies of a view of a neighbourhood that lacks any professional architectural knowledge behind its construction. By this means I’ve aimed at making something, which was completely unplanned and has developed chaotically, seem to follow certain logic or even an aesthetic principle.

For the drawing of the market stand I followed this same procedure, trying to depict informal commerce on a way by which it might seem more modern and studied than what one might think about it in the first hand.

Finally, I’ve tried to shed light over how an originally elegant residential building might have to be adapted, and sacrifice some of its aesthetic qualities in order to become more adequate for a city with big social differences and huge insecurity.

Corroding Stain
(Mexico City)

This etching is an attempt to discover the limits of Mexico City. Using Google Earth, I tried to recreate the city’s form (understood as all the area in the valley of Mexico that is covered by concrete). The fact that the work found its final state by means of an etching is not a matter of chance. Through the medium I intended to establish a relationship between the shape of the city, which deteriorates and pollutes the environment, and the harmful gas that results from the chemical reaction of the acid coming in contact with the metal plate. The project is in this sense an attempt to assume my responsibility in polluting Mexico City.
